Happy Birthday to Alfred Hitchcock, whose death in 1980 will not, I hope, inhibit his celebrating. The man’s directing could require stunning patience of the viewer, but when it paid off — holy fucking shit.
Among his many films that influenced me, my favorites are The Birds, Rear Window, and Vertigo, in that order. I also love Psycho, North by Northwest and The Man Who Knew Too Much, and am less crazy about but still fascinated by Strangers on a Train (based on a Patricia Highsmith story) and Rope.
According to Wikipedia, he had phobias of the police (so bad that he never learned how to drive) and, strangely, egg yolks (being particularly annoyed by poached eggs). Never trust a director without phobias.
Are you a Hitchcock fan? What’s your favorite Hitch flick?
