I don’t really know what to say about the apparent suicide by hanging of David Foster Wallace. I had not read his books but was fascinated by the phenomenon he represented. I was introduced to his legend some longago sci-fi convention when Cecilia Tan was reading “Infinite Jest,” and I thought to myself “You’re reading 1,000 page novel that doesn’t have Samurai? Willingly?” But she seemed to be enjoying it well past the point of sanity, cackling maniacally as she discussed it. Cecilia is not really prone to maniacal cackling, so it left quite an impression on me.
Condolences to his family, his friends, and anyone who ever liked one of his books.
